a rare early image of the noted conjoined twins. Born in 1851, the twins were taken from their parents, and sold three or four times, and placed on display at fairs and 'freak shows' from New Orleans to Canada. At one time, having been sold to J.P. Smith, they were kidnapped and taken to England. Smith retrieved them with the aid of their mother and they were brought back to North Carolina. Smith then taught them to read and write; they taught themselves music, and were proficient on several instruments. They then settled into a routine of touring and performing. The twins passed away in 1912.
