Additional Details

The noted conjoined twins were born in slavery in North Carolina on July 11, 1851. The girls were talented and could both sing and play instruments. Millie and Christine were taken from their parents and sold several times before finally being acquired by J. P. Smith. Just prior to the Civil war, while performing in New Orleans, the twins were kidnapped. It took years for Smith to reclaim them, and by then they were legally free. They chose to remain with Smith rather than return to their mother.
