Additional Details

Sun Ra, born Herbert Sonny Blount (1914-1993) pioneered collective improvisation, a technique sometimes heard in the music of Ornette Coleman and Sonny Cherry. Sun Ra formed his famous "Arkestra" in 1953, fusing Afro-Cuban rhythms with bop and jazz. The present poster was created by Gary Grimshaw while working as art director fore the Ann Arbor Blues and Jazz Festival, 1972-1973. With his hair shoulder length, and definitely a "hippy," the Detroit Free Press said of Grimshaw, "If he hadn't been the poster artist for the counterculture, he could have been its poster child."
