the first edition, second printing of the first such collection by an african american. This lovely little volume was a family effort, down to the front cover which shows, in two contrasting panels "Slavery Days" versus "Freedom Days." The entire arrangement and supervision of the book was carried through by Katy Taylor, the compiler's wife. Dr. F. S. Hoyt, editor of the Western Christian Advocate who provided the Introduction, says in his very first sentence: "If you would know the Colored people, learn their songs." Taylor was the father of the champion cyclist.
