Additional Details

A fine representative group of songs, many of which have become part of the fabric of our national musical heritage. 'The Old Flag Never Touched the Ground' is about the assault by the mostly black 54th Regiment on Fort Wagner during the Civil War. It is an allusion to a famous incident when the standard bearer Sergeant Wall of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteers was shot and dropped the flag. Sergeant William Carney saw what was about to happen, and caught the flag before it could touch the ground. He won the Medal of Honor for his act.
