Originally created at the Virginia Minstrels in 1843, the group's personnel and name changed over time, and more than a few groups laid claim to the name of Virginal Minstrels. However, J.W. Johnson's troupe remained one of, if not the foremost African American minstrel troupe. The Library of Congress dates this poster at 1921, however a pencil note on this poster says 'Jan. 1924.'.
