Additional Details

Samuel S. Sanford (1821-1905) was one of the earliest blackface minstrels, at his peak in the mid-nineteenth century. He published numerous collections of songs, in all, 36 works, appearing in 121 publications in 3 languages. The present playbill bears an excellent engraved vignette at the top showing a group of slaves playing music and dancing in a cabin. While numerous other playbills from Sanford's Opera Troupe are located in OCLC, we could find no copy of the present one.
