Additional Details

The seven unmanned Surveyor missions, which were launched from June 1966 to January 1969, were designed to map the moon's terrain to find suitable landing sites for the Apollo program as well as take scientific data for research. Of the seven attempts to land the Surveyor spacecraft on the surface of the moon, 5 were successful. The Surveyors transmitted over 80,000 70 millimeter video photographs to Earth. These resulting photographs were then intricately collaged into photo mosaics according to meticulous schematic plans. <
