Autograph Letter Signed, "Napoléon," to an unnamed Rector ("Monsieur le Recteur"), in French, thanking him for sympathies concerning the "terrible events that have taken place in France," and adding that, in the face of "such calamities, we can only bow our heads before the decrees of Providence." 1 page, 8vo, with integral blank, monogrammed stationery; light scattered staining along right edge. Defeated by the Prussians and deposed by the French National Assembly in the year that this letter was penned, Napoléon III (Louis Napoléon; 1808-1873) lived out the few remaining years of his life in the way he had begun it after the end of Napoleon I's reign--in exile.
