Additional Details

first edition of a late but very informative narrative, written when its author was 80 years old. Anderson typically had a reasonably good relationship with his master when he was a child, but things changed as he became an adult. He states that his owner did not believe in whipping, but if he was away, the overseer or someone else would carry out the punishment. He recounts a horrific whipping he received at 14, 'which should have killed me but I guess I was too tough or too stubborn to die."
