Fine examples of the Indian school of natural history studies which flourished under the patronage of the early British colonial government. The British East India Company began to encourage native artists to learn western techniques in portraying local plants and animals for purely commercial reasons. But soon the artistry of the Islamic artists found a larger audience with commissioned British administrators wishing to record the beauty found in their local surroundings.
