Additional Details

The preliminary text on verso of the title indicates that only 100 copies of the octavo text would be printed. Although intended as 5 parts, only 3 were published. Rafinesque, considered by historians as eccentric yet prescient in his proto-Darwinian views, published his works in small quantities, thus contributing to the rarity of his material. This work lists and describes 2500 botanical specimens and, as the introduction and rear wrapper indicate, was issued to accompany specimens which he was offering for sale at rather high prices.<
