Wangenhein served in the Hessian army during the American Revolution, studying the trees of New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania in his spare moments. He published this descriptive catalogue upon his return, with a particular focus on possible uses for these trees in Germany. Although the text is in German, the names of each tree are also given in English and Latin. No other copies known at auction in America since 1944.
