A collection of 16 watercolors of large mammals, and a manuscript title page, extracted from Smith's: "The Ruminantia, Vol I." 417x333 mm and 402x325 mm sheet sizes. All on wove, watermarked "J Whatman Turkey Mill 1846" or "1845". Binding marks, some minor edge loss and dampstaining to the title. Some signed, and apparently drawn from life, others initialed "CHS". [England, circa 1845-46]

Smith was a tireless student of natural history, as well as a soldier and explorer. He spent the last four decades of his life cataloging his studies through a remarkable collection of drawings. This selection covers buffalo, elk, caribou, muskox, etc.
