Additional Details

This lot includes 51 letters and naval documents dated 1797-1821. The earliest is a commission issued by the French Republican government to St. Medard as a supercargo for a ship in French Guiana in the sixth year of the republic (1798). Most of the collection consists of letters and documents relating to his pay as a naval surgeon, 1816-1821; and regarding his work selling patent medicines as the Boston agent for a fellow French expatriate, Ligneau of New York. Also included are 26 personal receipts dated 1807-22. We have offered other groups of St. Medard papers in our 28 September sale and above, acquired at the same descendant's estate sale--but by a different consignor.
