Binder of navy recruitment photographs from shortly before the war. 93 photographs, each mounted on linen as issued with inked stamps of the Navy Recruiting Bureau on verso, bound by stubs into original oblong 4to post binder with printed title "Naval Photographs: Training Station Activities, Ship and Fleet Scenes, U.S. Navy Recruiting Service"; minor wear to binder and contents. This binder of official naval photographs was used as a recruitment tool, selling a life of discipline, comradery, global adventure, and advanced training to young men in port. Only one of the photographs is dated: "Presidential Fleet Review, 1934." All of the photographs appear to date from this period shortly before World War Two. Training stations in Newport, RI, San Diego, CA, and Hampton Roads, VA are well represented. International locations include Panama, China, Japan (a "geisha dance" aboard ship), and Cuba. Other surprises include a boxing match, a shipboard football practice, several libraries, the "Cooks and Bakers' School," Curtiss combat airplanes, and bluejackets posing in a traditional canoe on a Hawaii beach (illustrated).
