(NAVY.) Enrique Muller, Jr., photographer. Photograph of the USS Arizona on its maiden voyage. Silver print, 13 x 18 1/2 inches, with photographer's copyright in negative; laid down on board, minimal wear. New York, [1916]

Additional Details

The USS Arizona, one of the biggest fighting ships in the world at that time, was built at Brooklyn Navy Yard and launched to great ceremony on 19 June 1915. It then returned to the navy yard for fitting out, was commissioned into the Navy on 17 October 1916, and departed New York on 10 November. This photograph, showing the Arizona with guns fully mounted, is likely from the latter date.

This photograph was taken from the Manhattan Bridge, which was completed in 1909. The Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan skyline are featured prominently in the background. Another well-known Muller photograph from the exact same vantage point was taken just a few seconds later, but we have traced no other examples of this exposure.

The Arizona was destroyed at Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, with the loss of most of its crew.
