Estimate: $ 600 - $ 900
(NAVY.) Group of 6 large photographs of the United States Naval Academy shortly after the Civil War. Albumen photographs, each about 5 x 8 inches, on matching 8½ x 11-inch paper mounts with short pencil captions; minor wear. Annapolis, MD, circa 1869-1870

Additional Details

One shows the academy's "Upper Buildings" or "New Quarters" at the time of its 1869 construction (the shrubberies are freshly planted). This was the main dormitory before being superseded by Bancroft Hall; the clock tower was torn down in 1899 and the building followed in 1905. Others show the chapel and superintendent's house.

Two of these images have been located in the Pat Hathaway collection at Monterey County Historical Society, one of them of the ordnance laboratory, and the other which they have titled "Mess Hall, United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland 1870." We have found no other examples of these images, and no photographer's credit.
