Additional Details

Charles Bordman (1806-1884) served as a carpenter in the United States Navy from 1833 through 1873. Includes orders signed by eight different Secretaries of the Navy, most notably two by Gideon Welles (and also Secretaries Upshur, Mason, Bancroft, Preston, Graham, Dobbin, and Toucey). An 1842 order is countersigned by Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry. From the Civil War years are Bordman's draft letter to Secretary Welles asking to be transferred off the USS Wabash to the Boston Navy Yard, "as I have served in this ship for the last 26 months without intermission," 1 July 1863; and a Letter Signed from Welles granting the request, 11 July 1863.
