Additional Details

Commodore Alexander James Dallas Jr. (1791-1844), son of the Secretary of Treasury, fell ill and died in Peru while serving as Commander in Chief of American naval forces in the Pacific. This diagram shows the order of procession for his elaborate funeral. It began with a naval procession, with flags denoting vessels representing France, Great Britain, and Sardinia, as well as several ships from the American Pacific fleet. This was followed by the burial, and then the naval procession in reverse. See the Southern Literary Messenger, January 1845, page 22-23.
