(NEW ENGLAND) A lovely album with 44 rich, crisp cyanotypes of Vermont, New Hampshire, and the Connecticut River, including Rudyard Kipling's homestead in Vermont, forested landscapes, several scenes of Chester (including two views of a visit from President McKinley), views of Brattleboro, two scenes depicting "Spanish prisoners" on Seavey's Island in New Hampshire, picturesque views of stately homes, some studies of children and family groups, the Isle of Shoals (also in New Hampshire), and a winter landscape scene including a train and its plume of smoke. Cyanotypes, 18 are circular with a diameter of 3 1/4 inches (8.3 cm.), and the rest 3 1/2x4 1/2 inches (8.9x11.4 cm.), and smaller, and the reverse, each with a carefully written caption, in pencil, on mount recto. Oblong 16mo, gilt-lettered cloth, slightly soiled. 1897-1898
Only one of the images of President McKinely in Chester is dated (1897). However, the image depicting the Spanish prisoners on Seavey's Island must date to the following year. They were likely the approximately 1600 men captured from the armored cruiser Cristobal Colon during the Battle of Santiago de Cuba (July 1898) in the short-lived Spanish American War.
