Additional Details

Small archive of correspondence from Ichabod Goodwin of Portsmouth, NH, one written as governor. Ichabod Goodwin (1794-1882) was a merchant and politician in New Hampshire, serving in the state legislature and finally as the state's 27th governor (1859-61). Goodwin formed a shipping and mercantile partnership with Samuel E. Coues in the early 1830s. The firm was particularly active in the freighting of salt. About half the documents present here are related to that firm. They include shipping accounts and correspondence from 1837-49. The remaining letters also primarily concern business matters relating to Goodwin's shipping ventures, plus 4 letters addressed to his wife.
