Additional Details

These papers are mostly from the family of Hiram Holt (1807-1894) and his wife Rowena Breed Holt (1809-1888). Highlights include an 1860 letter from Elihu Wilder of Peterboro discussing his banjo playing at length; an 1865 pocket diary mentioning Lincoln's funeral; a series of 17 promenade card photographs showing the Holts' golden wedding anniversary celebration at their farm in Nelson, taken by J.A. French of Keene, NH; and a letter from grandson Clifford Holt on the frontier in Creighton, Nebraska in 1881. Cousin H.H. Holt sent a letter dated 23 January 1864 from his regiment's camp near Falmouth, VA; he may be the soldier depicted on an accompanying carte-de-visite. A series of letters from an unidentified family member in Westhampton, MA make frequent mention of the war.
