Additional Details

Robert Shoemaker Dana (1833-1915) sketched this peaceful island scene as a young man while visiting from Philadelphia, shortly after the rail line to Atlantic City was completed in 1854. His caption on verso explains that "the pile driver to the right was m[aking] a wharf for shipment of freight." The two men in the boat in the foreground are Dana and his friend. They are sharing a meal of clams and crackers, with Dana passing his shucking knife across the boat. This view predates the city's famous boardwalk by many years, not to mention the Trump Taj Mahal.
