The Society for Establishing Useful Manufactures was a visionary private-public partnership to develop water power in Paterson, NJ, making it one of America's first industrial centers. Alexander Hamilton was a key figure in its development. This lot includes:

Pair of the Society's stock subscription sheets. Partly-printed Documents Signed by William Duer as governor and Elisha Boudinot as secretary on recto, and by Benjamin Walker (Washington's former aide) and Nicholas Low (thrice) on verso; on forms printed by Hugh Gaine of New York. Each 5 x 7 1/2 inches, made out to Cornelius Ray; one with mount staining in margins, the other with applied arrow stickers pointing to signatures. New Jersey, 13 January 1792.

Group of 6 "Patterson Lottery" tickets to support the Society, each about 2 x 4 inches, with ticket number added in manuscript, and signed by Jonathan Rhea. [Newark, NJ, 1797].

Elisha Boudinot. Autograph Letter Signed to Nicholas Low, Governor of the Society. 2 pages, 9 x 7 1/4 inches, plus integral address leaf without postal markings; minor dampstaining. Regards the sale of lottery tickets to Philadelphia supporters: "This is much more than ever I expected from Philadelphia, as none of the superintendants there except one have any interest in the Society. . . . Have a meeting of the stockholders in New York and see what could be done. . . . The bearer Mr. Wood wishes one hundred dollars on acc't of printing &c. He would wait until the tickets were sold, but is a young man and wishes to purchase another set of tipes." Newark, NJ, 24 February 1794.
