Additional Details

The major figures in this archive are blacksmith and farmer John A. Hopper (b. 1800); his children Samuel J. Hopper (1822-1841) and Mary Leah Hopper (1848-1918); Mary's husband Abram C. Holdrum (1837-1909), active in state politics; and their son Garret Milton Holdrum (born 1881). Samuel J. Hopper was an 1841 Rutgers University graduate who died the following year while attending New Brunswick Seminary. The collection includes many of his letters home to his father, as well as letters and poems on his death. Other highlights include ten early 19th-century school exercise books; 2 letters to Mary Leah Hopper from a Civil War soldier, 17 postcards and photographs of New Jersey scenes, and an 1867 school register. The family resided in Washington, Tappan, Westwood, and River Vale, and elsewhere in the Bergen County area. A more detailed inventory is available upon request.
