"It may perhaps be thought needles in me to tell you that the support of the government is expired; that being a thing not unknowne to any part of the Legislature. The Petition from the President and council, the Speaker and diverse members of the Assembly to his Majesty, for a separate Governour from that of New-York, wherein they Assure his Majestie that the inhabitants of this Province, are Equally willing and able to support a distinct governour with diverse of the neighboring collonies who enjoy that Benefit under his Majestie; which humble request or rather Prayer, upon the assurances therein given to his Majesty, he was most graciously pleased to grant . . . there seems no room to doubt that Pursuant to the assurances given you will on your parts readily and most willingly agree to such a disposition as will be most suitable . . . For my part I shall willingly give my Assent to any laws in my power to do, that shall be beneficial to the publick . . ."<
