Additional Details

Archive of Hyde family photographs and some papers, notably images relating to the dedication of Hyde Memorial State Park in New Mexico. Benjamin Talbot Babbitt Hyde (1872-1933) was the grandson of businessman and tycoon Benjamin Talbot Babbitt. A native New Yorker, he and his wife moved to Santa Fe in 1927 to pursue their love of nature, particularly the education of children about the natural world. Actively involved with the Boy Scouts in New York City, Hyde became a Scoutmaster in Santa Fe. He purchased 350 acres in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains outside the city, which served as a retreat and private nature park. He died in a car accident in 1933, and in accordance with his wishes, his family donated the park land to the state of New Mexico, establishing one of the oldest parks in the state. Hyde Memorial State Park was dedicated 10 May 1936. Approximately 30 documents relate to the dedication ceremony, including programs for the event, plus about 25 photographs of the dedication. Also present are other Hyde family photographs, and several images of Hyde, together with genealogical research and other material.
