first edition, inscribed and signed by Gregg to his sister-in-law on the front free endpaper: "To M. Eliza Gregg, with the affectionate regards of her brother, Josiah." "Chief contemporary authority on the Santa Fe trade-route and traffic"--Howes G401 ("b"). The recipient was Martha Eliza McClellan Gregg (1818-1876). The volume also bears later ownership inscriptions from her husband John Gregg (1800-1888), their daughter Alla Gregg (1844-1876), and Martha's nephew Gregg W.
