(NEW YORK.) Advertising card for "Coaches and canal boats" along the Erie Canal. Illustrated advertising card, 3 x 4 1/2 inches; minor foxing. Utica, NY, 1 August 1822

Additional Details

This card promotes a newly opened section of the Erie Canal between Utica and Little Falls to the east, about 20% of the way to the canal's ultimate terminus in Albany. A pre-existing stagecoach line from Utica to Albany acquired packet boats to run this new stretch of the canal, saving some time and offering some novelty to their passengers. The novelty was a significant part of their pitch: "Parties can at all times be furnished with an extra Packet exclusively for themselves, and gentlemen travelling in their own carriages, will find an agreeable relief in this short excursion on the Canal. This is a very interesting part of the route, as it passes through the German Flats, a delightful country, and affords the passengers an opportunity of seeing several locks." No other examples traced in OCLC or at auction, and quite possibly a lone survival.
