Micah Sterling (1784-1844) served as one of New York's U.S. Representatives from 1821 to 1823. He was an 1804 Yale graduate and for most of his adult life was an attorney in Watertown in northern New York. Among the many interesting political letters is an 1823 Autograph Letter Signed by Secretary of War John C. Calhoun (Sterling's Yale classmate) on the developing presidential race, dismissing the candidacy of the "Radical Party's" candidate William Crawford and assessing his own prospects against Andrew Jackson. Other highlights include: a manuscript copy of Sir George Prevost's War of 1812 proclamation explaining his retaliation against American frontier tactics ("The villages of Lewiston, Black Rock, and Buffalo have accordingly been burned"); minutes of an undated meeting to promote the Black River Canal; and extensive notes for political stump speeches, some in support of Van Buren's 1840 re-election campaign. with--More than 100 letters addressed to Sterling's brother-in-law, Congressman Isaac H.
