Oscar Handlin was one of America's great 20th-century historians, with a special interest in immigration and ethnicity. These letters relate to his biography of New York Governor Al Smith, a pioneering Irish-American who ran for president in 1928. The collection includes Typed Letters Signed from several key figures who knew Smith, including Robert Moses, Herbert Lehman, Frances Perkins, and Smith family descendants. Moses's 13 December 1957 letter is accompanied by 2 pages of comments on Handlin's draft, full of his detailed personal impressions of Smith, such as "There should be more reference to Smith's type of oratory and what he learned from the speakers Father Kean took him to hear. Smith memorized thousands of words of the flamboyant oratory of that period."
