Colonel William Cary Sanger (1853-1921), an 1874 Harvard graduate who resided in New York City and Sangerfield, NY, served as Assistant Secretary of War. Among the correspondents featured in this lot are John Adams Dix, Charles Evans Hughes, Seth Low, Frederick Law Olmsted Jr., Elihu Root, Henry L. Stimson, and several military leaders. A few of the letters relate to Sanger's work on the State Commission on Lunacy. with--a personal Autograph Letter Signed from Civil War general Charles Cleveland Dodge to his future wife Mary Schieffelin, on the letterhead of the Phelps, Dodge & Co. mining company, New York, 19 August 1863 (shortly after Dodge's resignation from the army). Dodge was Sanger's father-in-law.
