Additional Details

An Albany history buff compiled these odd volumes. His methodology is explained in his introduction to the 1942 volume: "I was snooping through the mass of paper that is daily dumped into the waste hole in the basement of New York State's Capitol one morning in 1940 when I discovered a pile of old documents pertaining to the canals . . ." Each volume includes 19th-century manuscript material, some of substantial interest: pay receipts signed by canal laborers in 1819, canal navigation certificates from the 1840s, an 1871 loyalty oath signed by the assistant weigh-master at Syracuse, and much more. The historical essays by Boos are also interesting.
