Additional Details

Washington G. Smith (1828-1893) operated his own photograph gallery in Cooperstown from 1864 to 1893, capitalizing on the region's growing tourism industry. His catalogue leans heavily into the work of James Fenimore Cooper, with descriptions of many scenes quoted directly from "The Deerslayer" and other works. Nearly 200 views are listed, along with 6 pages of descriptive text on the local sights and two endorsements. The catalogue can be approximately dated by a mention of the lake steamboat Natty Bumppo (launched in 1871) and its publication by a newspaper which was renamed in 1878. None in OCLC or at auction.

With--a carte-de-visite promotional card for "W.G. Smith's Stereoscopic Views of Otsego Lake Scenery, Cooper Views, &c." Albumen photograph, 3¾ x 2¼ inches, on original mount with photographer's backmark.
