Art instructor Rufus Alexander Grider (1817-1900) moved to Canajoharie, NY late in life, and soon became fascinated with the local lore of the Mohawk Valley. From 1886 until his death, he traveled throughout the region, sketching artifacts and ruins. This work was acquired by a rare book dealer shortly after his death, with some of it compiled into nine scrapbooks which were acquired by the New York State Library in 1941.
This group of Grider's work relates to Queen Anne's Chapel, built in 1710, and includes: "Queen Ann Chapel at Ft. Hunter N.Y. from the North," ink wash signed by Grider, on a sheet with five signed reminiscences of the chapel by local residents, all 1887 "The Silver Communion Service, 2 Oak Chancel Chairs & Pewter Baptis'l Bowl Sent by Queen Ann in 1712." Two ink wash and watercolors on one sheet, each signed by Grider, 1887, with explanatory text "Queen Ann Parsonage at Fort Hunter N.Y." Two ink wash drawings on one sheet, each signed by Grider, 29 June 1887, with extensive explanatory text Samuel Ludlow Frey. "Queen Anne and Her Chapel of the Mohawks." Long newspaper clipping from the Wide Awake Courier of Canajoharie, 30 April 1889. with "Portrait of Allen W. Johnson of Brantford Ont. Canada a Descendant of Sir William Johnson and Mollie Brant of Johnstown N.Y." Watercolor captioned "drawn 1891 by A.H.H. Heming of Hamilton Canada for R.A. Grider" and 3 manuscript letters from John Frey of Palatine Bridge, NY to his wife Caroline (Ludlow) Frey, 1829. John and Caroline were the parents of Samuel Ludlow Frey (1833-1924), another prominent local Mohawk Valley historian. and a Canajoharie postcard and 11 other manuscript documents from Canajoharie and environs, 1820-1915.
