Additional Details

Romeyn Beck Hough launched his monumental The American Woods series in 1888, which featured large paper-thin cross-sections of trees mounted on pages in 14 volumes. He also issued at least two regional subsets featuring smaller specimens. The scarce Woods of the White Mountains featured 10 small boxes of specimens in a wooden box with a sliding top.
This particular set, Woods of the Adirondacks, appears to be otherwise unknown. It was probably issued in a similar format to Woods of the White Mountains, but the wooden case and five of the smaller boxes are not present. Twenty different trees are represented here, with multiple samples of each. A complete list of the specimens is available.
