Moses, the master planner of New York and Long Island, discusses at length "the future of Fire Island--particularly from the public viewpoint." He felt sure that in the small western villages of Fire Island, "many cottages will inevitably fall into the sea," and predicted that "at Smith's Point or Tangier there will be a bridge to the beach" which "should be a joint town and county undertaking, and should not be left, as it seems likely to be, to the tender mercies of a typical Long Island subdivider and promoter." The bridge to Smith Point County Park opened in this spot seven years later. Moses concluded with a complaint about the lack of "intelligent, forward-looking thinking" about the fragile barrier island, and urged his acquaintance to "wake up the local political gentry."
