This journal includes accounts with ship captains for canal towing and wharfage. Cargoes are sometimes mentioned as well, ranging from sarsaparilla to tablecloths. The towns along the Erie Canal route are mentioned frequently. John J. Tallmadge (1818-1873) later settled in Milwaukee, where he served a term as mayor.
