Additional Details

While not intrinsically a "schoolgirl map", this unusual, oversize, fully hand-drawn early 19th-century personal project should fit reasonably within that category by most standards. The present draft closely follows a later edition of Amos Lay's mapping of New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, having been carefully "Copied by Miss Harriet Whipple, aged 22, Westmoreland, August 17, AD 1830". Harriet Whipple (1808-1897) married John Van Frank in 1832. The pair lived out much of their lives in Oneida County, New York.

In this bewildering labor of love young Harriet complements the design of Lay's map by incorporating illustrated vignettes of the Erie Canal at the bottom and right edges taken from Amos Eaton's "Geological Profile Extending from the Atlantic to Lake Erie" (1824); by combining the two publications she has fashioned a quite sensible variant composition.
