Additional Details

This volume was compiled by Maria Hegeman Onderdonk (1801-1875) of Cow Neck (now Port Washington), Long Island, daughter of a cotton manufacturer. She later married well-known Long Island historian Henry Onderdonk, avoiding a name change. In addition to more than the usual supply of artfully rendered poems and bits of verse from friends and well-wishers, she has transcribed several long letters to and from family members, most written from Cow Neck and neighboring towns such as Hempstead and Jamaica, 1817-26, which fill the last 47 pages of the volume. First of these is a long letter from her future husband Henry written as a Harvard student in 1826.
