Additional Details

This album was compiled by Gladys Roosevelt (1889-1926), daughter of John Ellis Roosevelt (1853-1939), and thus the first cousin once removed of President Theodore Roosevelt. She lived with her parents at the Meadow Croft estate in Sayville, Long Island; she later married broker Fairman Rogers Dick.
This album was a Christmas gift from her sister younger sister Jean. Most of the photographs were taken during Long Island excursions--Sag Harbor, Fire Island, the Hamptons, Montauk, Oyster Bay, and more. Automobile racer William Bruce-Brown was apparently a close family friend, and the album includes more than 60 action photographs of three Long Island races: the Long Island Motor Derby in Riverhead, September 1909, and the 1909 and 1910 Vanderbilt Cup races. Early airplanes are also featured prominently, including 5 shots of a Curtiss plane exhibited at Mineola in June 1910, and 32 action shots from the International Aviation Tournament in Belmont Park, October 1910 (including Wright and Curtiss planes).
