first edition. One of the best compilations on everyday life in New York. Plates depict City Hall, the prison, and the almshouse. All of the major public buildings, businesses, and institutions are described. An appendix provides an edifying list of city nuisance ordinances, including one that Swann still follows to this day: "No bellman, cryer, drum, or fife . . . to be used at any place of sale by auction." Also included are two pages of regulations concerning slaves and servants. Only two copies known at auction in the past eighty years, both at Swann: 9 April 1943, lot 365 and 21 May 1998, lot 292. Howes B557.
