The Five Points neighborhood of lower Manhattan was synonymous with squalor and poverty in mid-nineteenth century New York, a nexus of gang violence, prostitution, contagious disease, and extreme population density. The modern film Gangs of New York was set there. The Five Points House of Industry was formed in 1851 to address the root causes of Five Point's problems, offering employment, medical assistance, and lodging to help lift residents from extreme poverty. This view shows the House of Industry's six-floor incarnation on Worth Street, clearly identified by two signs.
