Additional Details

These albums document construction, repairs and maintenance of several of the smaller bridges in New York City, including the 135th Street Bridge (9 photographs including one cyanotype, illustrated here, 1911-16) Eastern Boulevard-Ludlow Avenue Bridge (10 photographs, 1929-31) 145th Street Bridge (53 photographs including 6 cyanotypes, 1917-22 and possibly through 1940) Boston Road Bridge (30 photographs, 1926-29) Madison Avenue Bridge (53 photographs, 1918-35) and City Island Bridge (47 photographs, 1912-31). The photographs are not credited, but many may be the work of photographer Eugene de Salignac (1861-1943), who was with the Department of Bridges from 1906 to 1934. His work has been recognized in recent years for its uncommon artistry; see Carolyn Kleiner Butler's article, "It Felt Like a Real Discovery," in Smithsonian Magazine, September 2007. At least a handful date from after Salignac's retirement.
