(NEW YORK CITY.) Currier, Nathaniel; lithographer. Great Riot at the Astor Place Opera House, New York. Hand-colored lithograph, 9 x 13 inches; edges worn and soiled with a couple of short tears extending just into image area, a few faint stains in image, laid down on later stiff paper, tightly trimmed. New York, 1849

Additional Details

The riot was sparked by a dispute between the partisans of two Shakespearean actors, William Charles Macready of England and the American Edwin Forrest. Forrest's supporters stormed the Astor House, where Macready was appearing as Macbeth. At least 22 people died in the ensuing violence. This Currier print is perhaps the best-known image of the riot, as the New-York Historical Society's copy has been frequently published, but only 2 other institutional copies have been traced, and no other copies have been found at auction since 1914. Peters 4053.
