New York's first library first resided at City Hall, and began work in 1793 on a new building on Nassau Street. These receipts were issued by contractors for "digging the cellar belonging to the library," "10000 hard bricks," rideing 4 coloms" and more. One receipt is for a library share. Provenance: sold by Joseph Rubinfine to the consignor, November 1996.
