Additional Details

When she began this diary, Keziah O. (Foster) Hyde (1808-1887) was almost 60 years old, had two grown children, and had been widowed for 26 years. She spends much of the diary shuttling between the homes of her Manhattan daughter, her hard-drinking son Albert in Whitestone, NY, and her older brother Nathan in Springfield, MA. She grows attached to her opium-dispensing physician, and partakes in some of the New York culture of the period: the theatre, sleigh rides in Central Park, and candlelight processions down Broadway.
