The photogravures depicts workers building the tunnel in apparently hazardous conditions, as well as trains in the completed tunnels. The book was issued as a "Souvenir presented at the dinner tendered to the Directors and Officers of the Hudson & Manhattan Railroad Company" upon the completion of a 4-tunnel "grand circuit" linking Manhattan's rail lines to New Jersey.
