Additional Details

"Here, from a perspective on high, we get a sweeping look at the city's harbor and at the rivers that define Manhattan Island on either side, the Hudson to the left and the East River to the right. We can also look across the Hudson to New Jersey. North on the Jersey shore we see the Palisades; south are the Elysian Fields in Hoboken, an open, country space ... Hugging the Hudson and East River waterfronts are innumerable vessels, so massed together that they look, from a perspective on high, like dense flocks of birds" -- Deak 613.

The ring of architecture around the magnificent panorama features: City Hall, Castle Garden, Croton Reservoir, Grace Church, Institution for the Blind, Post Office, Merchants Exchange, Astor Place Opera House, Barnum's Museum & Astor House, Halls of Justice (Tombs), Bowling Green, Astor Library, Custom House, Odd Fellows Hall, University, Trinity Church, High Bridge, and South Ferry.
